The dialogue for peace on a thread of Light: the concept of Roma by light Acea 2022

The centre of Rome shines again thanks to the Christmas lights of Roma by light Acea 2022 project. A sky full of stars, made up of strings of low-consumption LED lights, runs through Via del Corso and gives an extremely suggestive scenic effect to everyone passing by.

This year, the light installation conveys messages of peace through dialogue. A luminous thread of 1,400 meters running from Piazza Venezia through via del Corso creates an artistic image of Peace among peoples. The luminous path opens and closes with two artistic paintings about Peace, located in Piazza Venezia and Piazza del Popolo. These masterpieces, which portray a dove completing the word “Peace” by giving it the missing letter “A”, are inspired by a poster created by the artist Armando Milani in 2002 for the United Nations. The theme of peace and dialogue is then reinforced by six sentences with a message of peace that alternate between the light installations.

“Roma by light Acea” 2022-2023: the contest

Once again this year, Acea launches the Rome by light Acea photo contest. Participating is simple: just take a picture of the lights on Via del Corso or of the Christmas trees in the various Town Halls of Rome and submit it using the dedicated form. You can access the form by scanning the QR Codes found on the interactive terminal near the trees.

The purpose of the Contest is to reward those who can represent through images the festive atmosphere created by the lights with reference to the themes of Sustainability, Peace or the Territory.

The contest is active from 8th December 2022 to 8th January 2023. An evaluation committee will choose the winners following four criteria: creativity, originality, technique and coherence with the aims of the Contest. Find out all the details on the regulation (only italian version).

Lights are always greener with Acea

The Acea Group, which has always cared about sustainability issues, this year is proposing something even greener: the lights of the iconic Christmas tree in Piazza Venezia are powered by a photovoltaic system which will give all exceeding energy to the distribution network.
Furthermore, the Christmas trees installed in the squares of the various Municipalities of Rome are illuminated by LEDs with bundles of luminous optical fibre, each one consisting of 300 tails to create enveloping decorations with diffused brightness.

Winners of Acea Rome by Light

The contest allowed participants to choose one of three thematic categories: “Emotions of Sustainability”, “Lights for Peace”, “Living the City”. The winner for “Emotions of Sustainability” was Federica Testini, the “Living the City” award went to Nelly Schneider, while the prize for “Lights for Peace” was won by Alessandro Di Mario. Two special mentions went to Marco Policicchio and Valeria Ciardulli.

How lights are born

Lights were first used to illuminate the city festivals of Southern Italy, around the 16th century. Over the decades, they became real works of art, taking the name of “Artist’s lights” thanks to their visual appearance. The lights, the colours, the architecture and the scenic aspect are important characteristics of these installations. Over the years, their importance has become so relevant that now even famous artists are involved in their design.
