The water watchers

At Acea there is a team of people, who are on the lookout day and night to ensure that water distribution in Rome and its province works properly. They are engineers and technicians from the Environmental Operations Room, a high-tech centre that manages all water infrastructures of the Ato 2 area remotely.

Watching over the water system

Rome. 10:30 p.m. on a Sunday evening. Gaia is sitting at her workstation in the Environmental Operations Room of Acea Ato 2 and is about to finish her work shift. Her colleague Simone is ready to replace her. After a quick briefing, handover is completed.

At the end of 2022, there were 1,211 remote-controlled plants on the collection and distribution network and a further 1,947 remote-controlled ones along the distribution network.

The staff of the Environmental Operations Room is composed of 30 people on a 24/7 service. They include men and women, young engineers and senior technicians who have long worked for Acea. They work side by side, putting together their skills and knowledge. These highly professional people are united by deep dedication and responsibility, especially towards the citizens they serve.

Data as at 31 December 2021

Our daily work mainly consists of remote operations to optimize water flows, control water pressure and ensure service continuity on the whole area served”, says Alessia Delle Site, Head of Operations.

Using onsite monitors, operators supervise the operation of the network and plants, review real-time measured parameters and compare them with available statistical data. In the event of malfunctioning, they can intervene remotely or call their onsite colleagues for immediate action.

Our first concern is prevention. By analysing data, we can plan maintenance operations, such as the renovation of an aqueduct, so that citizens do not suffer any inconvenience. If we face an emergency, we all take part in the taskforces set up by Acea. For example, the Operations Room gave a fundamental contribution to tackle the summer 2017 water crisis.

Alessia Delle Site, Project Coordination and Major Works Manager

Following full renovation of the operation room and its technological equipment, today Acea Ato 2 has a cutting-edge, real-time monitoring system covering the whole territory, in order to intervene promptly and ensure service continuity in any condition.

Therefore, the citizens of Rome and its province can feel safe, because they will always be looked after. The water guardians at Acea’s Environmental Operations Room Ato 2 are working to ensure that the entire water system is always in perfect working order.

The new Environmental Operations Room: innovation at the service of people

In October 2018, the Environmental Operations Room was completely renovated. Spaces and furnishing were designed in a way that simplifies teamwork, sharing and collaboration.

The Operations Room is now equipped with cutting-edge technological instruments and equipment, that can communicate with the remote control system of the networks and plants managed by Acea Ato 2.

This allows Acea to work with greater accuracy and promptness, offering citizens an increasingly efficient service.
