Through Acea Group company Areti, which manages electricity distribution, a total of more than 2 million meters will be installed with an overall investment of around 300 million Euro

The new meter installation programme will introduce second-generation (2G) technology, with notable benefits for consumers and operators

The programme to replace electricity meters in the Capital with second-generation “smart” meters will get underway from October. In the city of Rome more than 2 million meters will be installed, with an overall investment of about 300 million Euro.
ARERA, the Italian Regulatory Authority for Energy, Networks and Environment, has in fact approved the Commissioning Plan the second-generation Smart Metering System (PMS2) presented by Areti, the Acea Group company which manages electricity distribution and metering in the municipalities of Rome and Formello. The plan – which will develop over a period of 15 years, between 2020 and 2034 – provides for the replacement of existing first generation (1G) electricity meters with 2G smart meters for all consumers in the municipalities served by Areti.
Replacement of the meters marks the entry of 2G technology to the electricity grid, implying notable benefits both for consumers and for vendors and distributors. With 2G smart meters, thanks to a reading system that makes data available every 15 minutes, customers can more easily check consumption and orientate it based on daily household behavioural patterns. The functionalities of the new smart metering system will enable and enhance the use of state-of-the-art services to improve energy efficiency and safeguard the environment. The new technologies will also make it possible to more efficiently identify any malfunctions of local grids and meters, reducing recovery times and disruption for citizens.
The fifteen year plan envisages in particular a bulk electricity meter replacement phase, which will commence in October 2020 and will end in 2025. Preceding the bulk phase, in September, there will be a pilot phase to be developed in Rome’s Municipio IX.
A dedicated “2G Metering” section has been created on Areti’s website, where all information, relevant documents and a detailed plan of the bulk phase are available. During the roll-out of the bulk phase, as consumers become progressively involved they will receive dedicated prior communications, setting out all necessary information.
