The goal is among those validated by Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), the international network for the evaluation of climate change mitigation targets
ACEA has obtained from Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) validation of its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets. The goals assessed concern the direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions. The certification represents an important recognition of the decarbonisation path undertaken by ACEA to support the energy transition.
The ACEA Group has committed to achieving the following objectives: by 2032, a 56% reduction in GHG emissions per MWh of power generated, with respect to 2020; during the same timeframe, reductions of 32% in indirect GHG emissions and 56% as regards emissions deriving from electricity generation and from fuel and power supplied, as well as sold; lastly, a 30% reduction in emissions due to gas distributed and sold to customers. SBTi considered ACEA’s targets to be in line with the “Well below 2°C” trajectory, the target set by the 2015 Paris Agreement to limit the rise in global temperature to well below 2° compared to pre-industrial levels.
Science Based Targets initiative is an international network, born from the collaboration between CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project), United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), World Resources Institute (WRI) and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), which promotes best practices for the definition of science-based decarbonisation targets and carries out an independent assessment of the objectives set by companies.
“The recognition obtained from this prestigious international network - commented Fabrizio Palermo, ACEA Chief Executive Officer and General Manager – confirms the Group’s commitment to the progressive reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in all its business areas, in keeping with its sustainable development targets, with a view to making a real contribution to the fight against climate change”.
