From the Acea Group contest, several initiatives in the field of water, environment and energy: energy communities to encourage the use of renewable energy, "zero consumption" systems, water basin rehabilitation activities and apps to calculate C02 savings – here are the challenges of the company for an increasingly technological and green service management

The second edition of the contest launched by Acea a year ago ended today with the award ceremony, with which the best "sustainable" projects – implemented or currently in progress – in the territories in which Acea operates were selected, in the areas of energy transition, protection of socio-sustainable development and innovation, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda.

The initiative, which took place in Tuscany, in the territory of one of the Group companies, Acquedotto del Fiora, with the patronage of the Ministry of Ecological Transition, obtained the certification of low environmental impact initiative from Ecoevents–Legambiente. The contest and the projects evaluation saw the participation of Safe and Marevivo. The award ceremony was an opportunity to create moments of sporting aggregation, particularly desired after two years of pandemic, among the people of the Acea Group who participated in the implementation of the competing projects. Furthermore, in line with the green spirit, Marevivo organised the cleaning of a stretch of beach on the Tuscan coast.

For Acea, the Chairman Michaela Castelli and the CEO Giuseppe Gola participated to the initiative; for the Group companies, Acquedotto del Fiora, the Chairman Roberto Renai and the CEO Piero Ferrari; for Marevivo, Laura Gentile, project manager; for Safe, the Chairman Raffaele Chiulli and, finally, the deputy mayor of Monte Argentario, Erasmo Quondam Vincenzo.

For the "Innovation and start-up" category, the prize was awarded to Gori, a company of the Group that manages the water service in Campania, with the energiaperilsarno.it project, a website created to inform the territory about the rehabilitation and monitoring works of the Sarno river basin. The "Energy Transition" award went to Acea Innovation, for the "Comunità Energetiche Rinnovabili” (Renewable Energy Communities) project, created with the aim of increasing energy independence. Renewable energy communities, in fact, by enhancing the use of renewable energy, avoid the emission of about 60 thousand tons of CO2 per year and guarantee economic savings in consumption.

Among the proposals for "Protection and Social Development", the one from the Industrial Area of the Engineering and Services Group was awarded with "Volatolomics da espirato” (Exhaled air volatolomics), a research and experimentation work, in collaboration with the Tor Vergata University Hospital and with the Sagen association, aimed at defining a breath analysis methodology that has been shown to provide useful information for the prevention of some types of tumours. Acea, in fact, makes its technologies available in research sectors which, due to the high value of sustainability, concern the protection of health.

The People’s Choice Award went to Umbria Acque with “Umbria resiliente” (Resilient Umbria), a project for the construction of a pipeline that will feed a new water purifier near the Petrignano power plant, in the province of Perugia. A "zero consumption" system, thanks to a photovoltaic system and two turbines that will produce energy by exploiting the height difference between the derivation and the system. The Marevivo Special Award was awarded to Acea spa with the project “Sperimentazione UP2YOU per il calcolo risparmio emissioni CO2” (UP2YOU experimentation for calculating CO2 emissions savings), an app that allows to calculate the carbon footprint savings (carbon footprint due to the emission of greenhouse gases) thanks to the reduction of the use of plastic bottles. Finally, the Special Safe Award goes to Acea Energia for “Insieme a noi, con la vostra energia!” (Together with us, with your energy!), a training programme based on new methodologies and accurate assessment tools that make it possible to enhance the potential and aptitudes of candidates.

Among the other projects in the competition, the "Agile Academy", the first academy in Tuscany, created by Acquedotto del Fiora to develop new professional excellence to be included in the territorial productive fabric.

"Sustainability and environmental protection are two important factors underlying our business activities. The goal of the contest, which has reached its second edition this year – said the Chairman of the Acea Group, Michaela Castelli – is to enhance the more sustainable projects and initiatives, carried out by the companies of the Group, with positive and tangible benefits in the territories where the company operates".

"All the projects awarded today – concluded the CEO Giuseppe Gola – have been able to combine objectives of industrial growth and protection of the territory and the environment, confirming the will of the Group, even more in this particular historical period, to contribute with important investments in the ecological transition process of our country and in the protection of its resources".
