Today, the mayor of Fiumicino, Esterino Montino, the Councillor for Public Works Angelo Caroccia and the president of Acea Ato 2, Claudio Cosentino, visited the Fregene purification plant.

This initiative happens with the launch of the DepurArt project, an idea of the Acea Group, which aims at transforming the Fregene purification plant (other purification plants will be considered in the future), into a cultural site to be visited. In this way, people would get to know closely the plant and the technologies it uses. The 'interactive' tour is made via an application—installed directly on your smartphone—which explains to citizens and students the complex process of water purification and the importance it has for environmental protection, with the help of audio documents, photos, and videos.

'As the administration, we are satisfied with this renovation that Acea has carried out on the Fregene purification plant,' declares the Councillor for Public Works Angelo Caroccia. 'An intervention that wants to protect our seas and not to waste a precious good like water. Any initiative that aims to protect the environment and our territory will always be welcome.'

'The Fregene treatment plant,' said Claudio Cosentino, president of Acea Ato2, 'thanks to the technologies used and the recent modernization of the plant, allows a management that, in addition to containing energy consumption, reduces the production of waste and chemicals used in water purification processes. This is an excellent plant for the inauguration of the DepurArt project which increases awareness of the role and importance that water purification plays in protecting the environment and the territory, by making it open to visitors.'

Located within the Natural Reserve of the Roman coast, in the municipality of Fiumicino, the Fregene purifier can treat the waste residues of approximately 76,000 inhabitants and approximately 6,000 tons a year of sludge that can be used in agriculture after the purification process. The quality of the water, treated with ultraviolet radiation lamps and peracetic acid dosage, is such that it can be reused for the irrigation of agricultural fields, during the driest periods. A sophisticated and innovative remote-control system then ensures constant plant performance and preventive maintenance capable of avoiding breakdowns. The operating data of the entire structure are monitored and analysed 24 hours a day, at the Acea Ato 2 headquarters.
