This evening, the Mayor of Rome, Virginia Raggi, and Giovanni Papaleo, Chief Operating Officer of Acea, inaugurated the renewed artistic lighting system of the old town of Ostia Antica. The President of the 10th Municipality, Giuliana Di Pillo, was also present.

The complex, located between Ostia Antica’s archaeological site and the banks of the River Tiber, includes a small number of houses surrounded by the old town walls and a little piazza with 15th-century buildings all around it. Inside, the Castle of Pope Julius II, which will be illuminated by 28 LED projectors, and the Paleochristian Basilica of Saint Aurea, lit up by 5 additional projectors. Visibility along the surrounding roads was increased by replacing 15 lights.

The Old Town, one of the most outstanding locations in the 10th Municipality, has undergone extensive renovations with the use of light and light architecture, carried out by Acea engineers as part of an initiative promoted by the City of Rome, in collaboration with Parco Archeologico di Ostia Antica.

“Rome lights up its historical and cultural buildings. Thanks to Acea, the plan implemented to renew the lighting systems of the monuments that best represent the Capital continues. We want to valorize our amazing buildings, a commitment we are even more passionate about now, during this delicate relaunch phase, especially for the tourism sector. Thanks to these artistic lighting projects, we are creating a unique atmosphere and offering locals and visitors the opportunity to appreciate and enjoy some of the most fascinating corners of the city at night. The work, started before the health emergency lockdown, resumes with this intervention in the Old Town of Ostia Antica, dominated by the Castle of Julius II and the Paleochristian Basilica, just a few steps away from the archaeological park. The project, consisting in the installation of low-consumption LED lamps, combines tradition and historical characteristics, innovation and electricity savings”, said Mayor Virginia Raggi.

“The Old Town of Ostia Antica is spectacular. The new lighting system adds value to this unique place. It’s a way for the Administration to demonstrate its appreciation to such a beautiful site. Yet another sign of the Capital’s support to its coastal area”, said Giuliana Di Pillo, President of the 10th Municipality.

“This artistic lighting intervention – said the Chief Operating Officer of Acea, Giovanni Papaleo – is part of a larger project involving the renovation of the artistic and historical heritage of the City of Rome. We have been working on these initiatives for quite some time and today we are particularly pleased with this work, aimed at valorizing such a suggestive location".
