During refurbishment of the system, 950 LED floodlights were installed together with around 50km of electrical cabling

Work to update the lighting system in the Giovanni XXIII Tunnel, which began on August 1, was completed today. Areti is the Gruppo Acea company responsible for managing Rome’s electricity distribution grid. This extraordinary project, involving the stretch of road between via della Pineta Sacchetti and via del Foro Italico, comprised the installation of 950 new LED floodlights and around 50km of electrical cabling. The tunnel will fully reopen in both directions tomorrow, following reinstatement of the road system.

The work inside the almost three-kilometer long tunnel was carried out based on a work plan developed in conjunction with the Department of Infrastructure Development and Urban Maintenance in Rome. Completed in 30 days, the project involved three continuous shifts, 24 hours a day, with 4 teams of specialist technicians on each shift and special equipment such as ladder trucks and vertical lifts. The works entailed the complete removal of the old system, with a total of 48 tonnes of material removed.

The previous lighting system, not managed by Areti, was therefore completely dismantled and refurbished using new LED technology, already applied for lighting in the northern direction during 2018. Areti has therefore equipped the entire Giovanni XXIII tunnel with seamless, modern lighting, improving road safety and reducing the impact of energy consumption.
