Enhancement of purification plant grids

Description and objectives

As part of the 2023 research commissioning plan for Acea Ato 2, a collaborative study was launched with the Department of Chemistry of the University La Sapienza, aimed at identifying virtuous paths for the enhancement of residues from the sieve analysis process of incoming flows to purification plants.

The main objective of the study was to carefully evaluate the composition and characteristics of the sieved material produced throughout the year. The aim was to examine both the energy content recoverable by thermo-combustion, thermo-chemical processes or alternatively by anaerobic digestion in co-digestion with waste sludge, with the possibility of recovering material to be used (COD) from the squeeze liquid.

Project details:

As part of the study, adequate technologies have been identified to:

  • squeezing treatment - identification of technologies for the efficient squeezing of residues;
  • energy recovery - evaluation of technologies for energy recovery from solid waste;
  • technical-economic and environmental analysis - detailed analysis of the costs, benefits and environmental impacts of the solutions proposed for the valorisation process.
