Coordination of safety during the design phase in the New Peschiera Aqueduct

Description and objectives

The construction site of the New Peschiera Aqueduct is divided into 17 construction site areas distributed along the path of the aqueduct that goes from the springs of the Peschiera river to the Salisano Power Plant.

Project details:

The complexity of the work includes a variety of processes, among which the following stand out for their particularity:

  • Underwater works,
  • Microtunneling installation of DN2500 pipes,
  • mechanised excavation of tunnel DN7500 using ROCK TBM,
  • mechanised excavation of tunnel DN4000 using TBM EPB,
  • tunnel excavation with the traditional method,
  • digging of wells about 140 metres deep with the traditional method,
  • excavation of tunnels and wells with explosives,
  • diversions of watercourses.

The complexity and extent of the works planned for the New Peschiera Aqueduct have made necessary a continuous dialogue between the Safety Coordinator during the Design phase and the design staff. This collaboration was essential to plan the logistics of the site areas and the multiple work phases, as well as to elaborate the planimetric and detailed drawings for the different operational phases.

In light of the numerous and different work activities, a Safety and Coordination Plan has been defined, which is structured so as to be usable in the various areas of the construction site subject to intervention. The plan also includes the transitional work phases necessary to ensure safety during the execution of the works and to keep the existing aqueduct in operation.
